Misao, a Japanese immigrant to Canada, describes her relationship with her late grandfather and the way that relationship has shaped the life that she lives today. She begins by talking about his past as a WWII soldier, and then as a journalist following the war. She then describes that the two of them felt close to one another, even though he died when she was very young. Misao explains that she always felt he was watching over her, and believes that his presence in her life was an influence in her decision to become a journalist in Japan. She talks about the skills that she learned as a journalist and how they apply to her life now today in Canada. She finishes the story by describing that part of her son’s name is derived from her grandfather’s, and tells a story about how her grandfather’s strong presence in her life helped her answer a difficult question about death for her son.
