I Don’t Sit Between Two Chairs. I Have Two Chairs To Choose From
This video portrait provides an insight into the life of Karin, a German immigrant to Canada. Karin grew up in Germany, in the Black Forest. When she was 16, she met a German soldier who was based near her hometown. In 1981 she marries him and they move to Toronto, Canada together. In this video portrait, she talks about her experiences at her first job in Canada, her first experiences of multiculturalism and how she overcame obstacles with the English language before becoming fully bilingual. Through these experiences, she managed to balance both a German and a Canadian way of life, without feeling like she had to pick one. All in all, she passes on a message of inclusivity and celebration of the coexistence of various cultures in Canada. She now lives near London, Ontario with her second husband, has two married children and a grandchild. Through her personal story, I learned about the importance of having an open heart when moving to a new place; The importance of embracing differences and focusing on the good things that that new place has to offer. -
If there is a will, there is a way. íQuerer es poder! The achievement of dreams – A personal story of immigration from El Salvador to Canada - Dec. 2015

With a focus on real-life heroes as those who overcome adversity and achieve their goals – parallels shall be drawn between Selvin’s hero, mentor and role-model, his father, and Selvin himself. Done in a story-board/comic book form the portrait shall embrace Selvin’s childhood hopes and express his transformation in attitude, goals and dreams as he grows up in Canada, where he and his family build their El Salvadorian-Canadian identity. Slevin’s core values of family and community are consistently embedded in his actions from childhood onwards. The overcoming of obstacles he faced as a new immigrant, minority in society and simply as a human in a competitive world, shall show that “Where there is a will, there is a way”. Selvin’s infallible and persistent attitude shall serve as an inspiration to the portrait’s viewers and will surely be a testament to true success. -

Inter-generational Discussion on Cultural Evolution
The portrait examines three generations of an Italian family and how the culture is passed on through these generations. We began by discussing the migration to Canada of my community partner’s father, how he felt in the first couple of days in Canada, and how he was able to maintain his cultural heritage while being in a foreign land. We discussed how Beverly’s father would cook Italian food, go to church and listen to Italian opera to immerse himself in his roots. Beverly then expressed the importance that her father placed on family, and how this is a core value that has been passed on to her children. She then told me a story about how every Sunday, her family still gets together in her house to have Sunday supper. -
